SGS has acquired CMIC, INC., a specialised bioanalytical testing services provider based in Chicago, Illinois, strengthening its life sciences testing network in North America.
The acquisition addresses growing demand from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies for high-precision bioanalytical capabilities across preclinical and clinical development. As biologics, oligonucleotides and complex therapeutics expand, sponsors increasingly require specialised analytical support that aligns with regulatory expectations from agencies such as the US FDA and Health Canada.
CMIC operates a 27,000 sq ft GLP-compliant facility that supports bioanalysis across both preclinical and clinical phases of drug development. Its capabilities are intended to support high-volume projects with quick turnaround requirements, particularly for specialised biologics and therapeutics.
For SGS, the deal strengthens its ability to provide bioanalytical data that supports safety and efficacy assessments for complex molecule therapies. The acquisition follows another US-based bioanalytical testing acquisition by SGS in the previous month, indicating a broader strategy to deepen its North American life sciences footprint.
The transaction also supports SGS’ Strategy 27 objective to double North American sales between 2023 and 2027. The company has supported the North American pharmaceutical industry for more than 30 years and operates a global network of more than 20 laboratories across 11 countries, including 10 GLP-compliant sites.
The target market includes pharmaceutical manufacturers, biotech companies and clinical development sponsors that require outsourced analytical testing during drug development. Adoption of SGS’ expanded services will depend on technical capability, turnaround time, regulatory quality, pricing and integration of CMIC into SGS’ broader laboratory network.
