Singapore: Canada-based Kane Biotech, which is engaged in the development and commercialization of products that prevent and remove microbial biofilms, has been granted a patent by the Australian patent office. The patent is titled 'Antimicrobial compositions for inhibiting growth and proliferation of a microbial biofilm on medical devices'.
The patent covers the company's Aledex technology for the antibiofilm-antimicrobial coating of medical devices to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
This patent protects the claims on composition comprising antibiofilm protamine sulfate and antimicrobial chlorhexidine salt, composition further comprising an additional antimicrobial such as triclosan and benzalkonium chloride, method of preparing a medical device coated or impregnated with protamine sulfate-chlorhexidine salt combination, and medical devices, including various types of catheter, pacemakers, prosthetic heart valves, prosthetic joints, voice prostheses and intrauterine devices.
This is the fourth patent for Kane Biotech's Aledex technology to protect the invention of a unique and synergistic composition, which provides a broad-spectrum antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity in medical device coating applications. We now have 19 issued and 28 pending patents covering our biofilm technology platforms worldwide," said Mr Gord Froehlich, president and chief executive officer of Kane Biotech.
