Smith+Nephew unveils digital innovation and medical education academy in Singapore

Facilitates immersive and interactive training environment for Asia-Pacific surgeons and nurses' exclusively to stimulate and refine their surgical skills in the state-of-the-art digital operating suite for better patient outcomes

Smith+Nephew, the global medical technology company, on November 9, launched Smith+Nephew (S+N) Academy Singapore as a major medical education and digital innovation centre to enhance and strengthen the Medtech learning capabilities in APAC region.

The academy was innaougrated in presence of Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Trade and Industry Singapore, Mr Alex Bamford, Deputy British High Commissioner to Singapore, and Smith+Nephew Chief Executive Officer Deepak Nath. 

As part of Smith+Nephew's Life Unlimited mission, the S+N Academy Singapore equips healthcare professionals in Asia-Pacific with a stimulating, immersive, and interactive training environment enabling them to explore latest products and technologies with expert guidance.

Deepak Nath, Chief Executive Officer of Smith+Nephew, said, "S+N Academy Singapore will give a a unique medical innovation experience for Healthcare professionals by providing them a right environment and tools to challenge the status quo, and to furthur refine surgical technologies to improve patient outcomes”.

Myra Eskes, President APAC and Global Service, Smith+Nephew, said, "Hands-on experience are crucial for surgeons and nurses thus the new Academy will be vital in improving access to the latest innovation to drive better clinical outcomes.”

S+N Academy includes a state-of-the-art digital operating suite of the future including handheld robotics, 4K arthroscopy towers, surgical navigation tools, live transmission capabilities and touch-screen interfaces. The digital experience is supported by a virtual reality simulation studio, tech-enabled teaching auditorium, and a professional broadcast studio where experts can record and live-stream surgical techniques to educate fellow healthcare professionals across the globe. 

The academy has fully equipped surgical super-stations for hands-on procedural training across Smith+Nephew’s entire portfolio of orthopaedic reconstruction, trauma, robotics, sports medicine, ear, nose and throat and advanced wound management. It is expected that up to 3500 healthcare providers will attend in-person courses at S+N Academy Singapore every year by 2025, with another 5000 being trained through digital technology. 

Furthur, S+N Academy Singapore will be partnering on initiatives within the wider healthcare community, including collaboration with start-ups, early-stage investors and industry partners to support the development of new innovations, and medical institutions to utilise the latest training infrastructure. 

Flagship programmes:

The education initiatives designed to be peer-to-peer flagship programmes includes exclusive courses such as INSPIRE (for Sports Medicine), and ASPIRE (for Orthopaedic Reconstruction and Robotics) and will feature 50 distinguished global faculty supporting nearly 200 healthcare professionals across Asia-Pacific.
