Singapore: The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed a second case of Ebola in the US, stating that a female nurse who tended to a sick patient in Texas has contracted the disease.

According to the associated Press, the nurse was in full protective gear while attending to the patient. CDC has said that the nurse is currently in stable condition and has been quarantined.

In a recent media briefing, Dr Tom Frieden, the CDC director, warned that other hospital staff could also have been exposed to the virus and may show symptoms in the coming days.

Dr David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, said that the team was working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread of the virus in the country.

Dr Frieden, further added that the second case of Ebola in the US soil was very concerning and this stressed the need to enhance training, prevention, and surveillance measures.

He also stated that a single lapse or breach in protocol could result in an infection and hence authorities must insist on strict adherence to the prescribed protocols and containment procedures.

Officials at the White House said that President Obama has asked the CDC to investigate an apparent breach of infection control procedures, and told federal authorities to take more steps to ensure hospital safety.
