Singapore: Healthcare workers and missionaries who were battling the deadly Ebola, are now falling prey to the virus. Ebola has gripped the African continent with fear, killing 670 people in a couple of months.

The virus has affected three doctors in less than a week, killing one of them. Dr Sheikh Humar Khan, Dr Kent Brantly and Dr Samuel Brisbane, were the three doctors from US working in Liberia who have contracted the infection. Dr Samuel Brisbane succumbed to the virus on July 26, 2014 while the other doctors are receiving intensive treatment.

Airports worldwide are under high alert after a new Ebola death reported in Nigeria. Few airports have set up isolation centers to contain the virus. With no vaccine or cure, infected patients are quarantined to stop further spread.

Ebola is a severe, often fatal illness with a fatality rate of up to 90 percent and is one of the world's most virulent diseases, according to WHO. It is transmitted by direct contact with the blood, body fluids and tissues of infected animals or people.

The WHO announced that it was opening a Sub-Regional Outbreak Coordination Center in Conakry, Guinea, in response to the outbreak. It further added, that the center will consolidate and harmonize the technical support being provided to West African countries hit by the disease and help mobilize resources to initiate quicker response.
