Alphabet introduces Verily study watch to assist clinical studies and health research

Verily, formerly known as Google Life Sciences unveiled the Verily Study Watch which will be used as an investigational device for gathering data from clinical studies. This watch is not meant for sale and will be used in several observational studies conducted by Verily's partners, including the Personalized Parkinson's Project, a multi-year study to identify patterns in the progression of Parkinson's disease and provide a foundation for more personalized treatments.

The display is always on so that time is always shown. Apart from that, the watch has been designed with several new key features such as-Multiple physiological and environmental sensors that are designed to measure relevant signals for studies spanning cardiovascular, movement disorders, and other areas. Examples of signals measured include electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, electrodermal activity, and inertial movements. It also comes with a long battery life of up to one week, large internal storage and data compression in order to drive better user compliance during longitudinal studies combined with a strong encryption of the stored data.

The launch of the Study Watch comes at a time when reports of possible enhancements of the Apple smartwatch has surfaced. A recent report by CNBC news spoke about Apple Watch making sensors that could non-invasively monitor the blood sugar levels of wearers.
