Singapore's dental group enhances its laser capabilities

Singapore, Oct 26, 2009: Team GPA, Singapore’s leading dental group, enhanced its laser capabilities with the recent purchase of the new Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece from BIOLASE Technology.
The release noted that the handpiece, which will be attached to the Waterlase MD2 System, possesses breakthrough dental laser optical technology which is much faster (comparable to a high-speed drill), and provides even greater precision and accuracy previously unattainable with conventional dental lasers in the market.
Presently, the existing benefits of the Waterlase MD2 system include minimally invasive procedures without the heat and vibration of the dental drill, and little or no bleeding or discomfort experienced by patients. With the addition of the Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece, patients, especially children, no longer have to endure lengthy and painful treatments in the dental chair.
Launched earlier this year, the Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece is able to ablate three times faster than before and its optical tip is capable of focusing the laser beam to a 500/700–micron diameter spot size (a strand of human hair is about 100 microns wide).
Dr Wilson Goh, Managing Director of Team GPA, said, “Before the Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece was introduced, one issue that our dentists were concerned with regard to the use of the Waterlase MD2 system was the speed required for hard tissue (teeth and bone) cutting. With the Turbo handpiece, our dentists are now able to cut faster through enamel without the heat and vibration of dental drills, providing patients shorter treatment periods and less discomfort. The Turbo handpiece enables us to broaden the scope of work with lasers and removes limitations that were previously in place.”
The Turbo handpiece is an addition to the Waterlase MD2 system which uses a combination of Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium Garnet (YSGG) laser energy and water, through a process called HydroPhotonics. It replaces the drill and dental scalpel in many dental procedures with lesser or minimal anaesthetics. These procedures range from cavity treatment to more complex surgeries including wisdom teeth and implant surgeries. Chances of post-op infections or other complications are greatly reduced because laser kills bacteria and will aid in a speedy recovery. The Waterlase MD2 system is capable of treating targeted areas of tooth structure and gum tissue while leaving surrounding areas unaffected, eliminating damage and conserving healthy tissue.
As the sole reference site for the Waterlase MD2 System in the Asia-Pacific region, Team GPA provides training to industry peers in Singapore and the region, and will continue to do so for the Waterlase MD Turbo handpiece.
Team GPA was also appointed the global reference site for the CEREC AC Digital Impression Unit by Sirona Dental Systems in March 2009. Having been the first in Singapore to acquire the CEREC 3D system in 2002, Team GPA has handled more than 10,000 cases and has all three internationally-recognized certified CEREC trainers of Singapore working exclusively in its team.
By applying leading edge technology in its practice, Team GPA strives to help Singapore dentistry gain greater recognition and also boost Singapore’s position as a regional medical hub.
