Bangalore, Jun 18, 2009: The federal government is starting eight new biotechnology institutions across the country that will complement the existing ones in promoting and expanding the biotechnology sector in India.
This is in addition to the introduction of legislation for protecting IPR and establishment of three new biotech clusters, said Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, the federal Minister of State for Science and Technology after inaugurating the ninth edition of Bangalore Bio, India's premier Biotech show.
Over 700 delegates representing 400 companies are participating in the event. The participation of delegates from Cuba is the highlight of Bangalore Bio 2009. The main objective of the event is to get international companies to collaborate with Indian companies and thereby provide an international platform for their business and showcase their products to a wide range of potential customers.
Mr Prithviraj Chavan said, “Bangalore Bio is a key science event in India. Biotechnology is the sunrise sector and Bangalore is emerging as the IT and BT capitals of India. A strong foundation of discovery and innovation is inevitable for the development of any country and the Government of India is giving emphasis on building that foundation. As a future initiative, the central government will set up eight new educational institutions for biotechnology, introduce legislation for protecting IPR and establish three new biotech clusters. The Indian government will keep on encouraging mutually beneficial partnership from international companies. Bangalore Bio is a promising initiative to attract international partnerships.”
Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister of Karnataka said, “The biotech sector is creating a big revolution by creating both opportunities and wealth. The Karnataka State has played a proactive role, as a friend, catalyst and facilitator in promoting the growth of the biotech sector. The institution of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) which was set up seven years ago, has emerged as the center of excellence. The government of India's decision to set up India's first Bio-IT center in the IBAB campus is commendable.”
The three day event comprises an international multi-track conference with five focused tracks and 22 sessions addressing key issues in collaborative partnerships in biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and diagnostics, bio-manufacturing, industrial biotech and bio-business, developed with the guidance of the Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises (ABLE), Karnataka.
