Singapore, Dec 17, 2008: Thailand to host the ABIC conference (Agricultural Biotechnology for Better Living and a Clean Environment) from September 22-25, 2009 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, Bangkok.
The conference is organized by the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), and many allied organizations in Thailand. Given the confirmed high profile speakers participation, the conference is expected to attract international researchers and agricultural industrialists.
One of the keynote speakers, Dr William James Peacock indicated that the highlight of his talk on “The Challenge of Enough Nutritious Food” will focus on the significant challenge in this world of ours to produce enough food for the increasing numbers and this challenge has been exacerbated of late because of various extreme weather events which have reduced production yields in many of the major food production countries of the world. As well as dealing with this in the large scale, high input agriculture of developed countries; the problem must also be attacked in the low input, often small-scale agriculture of developing countries. The challenge goes beyond the quantity of food. With our increasing knowledge of nutritional requirements for the healthy human condition, we know that many of the principal staple foods are not ideal in terms of human nutrition. Their use as staple foods contributes in a very large way to some of the major non-infectious diseases of the world.
The talk will also discuss some of the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead and also describe some advances that have already been achieved.
