CARD develops innovative therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

Bangalore, Sep 01, 2010: Centre For Advanced Research and Development (CARD), the research wing of India's Scalene Cybernetics Limited (SCL), a leader in innovative medical technologies is all set to make a pioneering contribution to the world of medicine for the treatment of life crippling illness Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The treatment is through Scalene’s revolutionary tool – CYTOTRON that can aid long-suffering patients to be relieved of this life deteriorating disorder and lead a normal life.

The innovative technology of CYTOTRON pioneered by Scalene provides an alternative to the millions who are suffer from MS all over the world. CYTOTRON aims at correcting the impairment by regenerating the Myelin Sheath in turn alleviating the patients from the distressing symptoms.

Dr Rajah Vijay Kumar, Chairman, Scalene is very excited with the encouraging results of the pilot trial on MS. There was marked reduction in the symptoms like visual disturbances, muscular spasticity, urinary incontinence, inability to walk, lack of coordination, etc. Based on these findings the research team comprising of Dr Ranjit Kumar, Principal Scientific Officer and Dr Varadarajulu, a renowned Neurologist and currently the Advisor for this project have the permission from the ethical committee and are ready for conducting a large scale study to further verify the effectiveness of this therapy.

Dr Varadarajulu said, “Multiple Sclerosis is no longer a disease of western countries. There has been an increase in incidence of MS in India and other asian countries which probably could be due to multi factor trigger and hence a treatment like this will benefit the patients of this disease in India and worldwide.”

Dr Ranjit Kumar said, “MS is caused as a result of non production of a specific protein by the oligodendriocytes which is responsible for the synthesis of myelin. CYTOTRON addresses this process of stimulation of oligodendriocytes thus helping correct the disorder. It is a non traumatic and non invasive procedure with no adverse side effects.”

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic neurological disorder of the brain and spinal cord, which is affects approximately 400,000 persons worldwide. Damage to Myelin Sheath, the insulation of nerve fibers is what causes MS. Till date, there has been no satisfactory therapy for MS and most of the available therapies are directed towards symptomatic management and modifying the immune system.
