Singapore: According to recent reports, India is completely reliant on China for 12 essential drugs used in the pharma sector. These are - paracetamol, metformin, ranitidine, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, cefixime, acetyl salicylic acid, ascorbic acid, ofloxacin, ibuprofen, metronidazole and ampicillin.
The country's national security advisor, Mr Ajit Doval had warned officials about its over-dependence on China for essential drugs. Sources reveal that in the last four years, India has imported bulk drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients worth Rs 38,186 crores.
Indian officials are now mulling a policy that can favor the development of APIs in the country. Many experts have warned that heavy reliance on one country for essential medicines can affect the public health system.
