Millions of dollars have been raised by the challenge for charity
Singapore: Celebrities across the globe are considering getting soaked for a cause! The ALS Ice Bucket challenge that went viral over the internet, was started by the ALS association to raise funds and to promote the awareness for fighting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease.
The challenge is simple. Participants douse a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads and post it on social media, challenging three others to perform the act or donate money to the ALS association. The association said that they have raised millions of dollars through the activity for charity purposes.
In merely a few days, the event that has gone viral across geographies has had eminent celebrities like Mr George Bush, Mr Barack Obama, Mr Justin Bieber, tennis ace Ms Sania Mirza, India's Bollywood actors like Mr Abhishek Bacchan, Mr Ritesh Deshmukh, Ms Sonakshi Sinha and many others have taken the challenge. Few celebrities like Ms Hansika Motwani took the challenge as well as donated money for the charity.
ALS is one of the five motor neuron diseases that causes muscle spasticity affecting one's ability to swallow, breathe and speak. The neurodegenerative disease has no known treatments or cure. The Ice Bucket Challenge campaign aims to collect funds and generate awareness of the disease among people to urge legislators help find treatments and a cure.
