MERS has claimed 287 lives so far, with 700 reported cases
Singapore: The Algerian health ministry has confirmed the first MERS fatality in the state. The 59-year-old victim had returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca and was hospitalized for 11 days after detection of the infection. He died as his vital functions collapsed.
The Algerian ministry said that the condition of the second confirmed MERS case, a 66-year-old man hospitalised in Kolea near Algiers, is better and has improved.
With the Haj pilgrimage approaching, several countries are cautioning their pilgrims to undertake strict precautionary measures to prevent the spread of a global pandemic. Global states are also now actively screening passengers from the Middle East, in order to prevent the virus from entering their borders.
