Healthcare infrastructure supports CRO growth in Asia
Narayan Kulkarni

Singapore, Sep 17, 2009:  There has been an increase in the healthcare spending in the region from $44 billion in 2006 to $54 billion in 2007 and $62 billion in 2008 notes IMS MIDAS. This shows that the governments in the region are keen on providing good and better healthcare services to the citizens. The healthcare spending in public hospitals in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong has increased during 2007-08. Though there is a drop in the percentage growth of healthcare spending in India, it is attributed to the drop in the public sector spending. However, investors and private equity players continue to make investments in the Indian healthcare sector along with the private sector players. Same is the case with other countries in the region.

This rise in healthcare investment and good healthcare infrastructure are attracting the pharma companies to outsource their clinical research activities to Asian companies.

According to clinicaltrials.gov, the number of clinical trial studies in the Asian region has increased by 67 percent in the last two years. China and Korea witnessed a growth of 120 percent and 155 percent respectively, in the last couple of years. Thailand and Singapore witnessed a growth of over 60 percent in a number of studies. While, Taiwan has the largest active ongoing clinical trial studies with over 822 trials India and Indonesia are growing at over 50 percent. There is no change in the number of trial studies in Hong Kong. But the scene is different in Vietnam, as the country witnessed a drop of 15 percent in the number of clinical trial studies.

With the support of the local government, rise in spending on setting up healthcare infrastructure, lower cost of conducting clinical studies and encouraging regulatory framework, the region is witnessing an increase in the number of clinical research organizations (CROs) in the last few years. Along with the partnerships/alliance between CROs of different countries, this trend will continue in the coming years too.

Leading causes of death in 2030
The four leading causes of death globally in 2030 are projected to be ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lower respiratory infections (mainly pneumonia). Total tobacco-attributable deaths are projected to rise from 5.4 million in 2004 to 8.3 million in 2030, and at that point they will represent almost 10 percent of all deaths, globally.
Apart from lower respiratory infections, the 10 main causes of death in 2004 included three other communicable diseases: diarrhoeal diseases, HIV/AIDS and TB. HIV/AIDS deaths are projected to decrease by 2030, but will remain the tenth leading cause of death globally. Deaths due to other communicable diseases are projected to decline at a faster rate: TB will drop to the twentieth leading cause and diarrhoeal diseases to twenty-third. Population ageing will result in significant increase in the rankings for most non-communicable diseases, particularly cancers. Increasing levels of tobacco smoking in many middle and low income countries will contribute to increased deaths from cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and some cancers.
