Bangalore, Aug 19, 2010: India-based Clumax Diagnostics, part of the Medall group, has installed the first SOMATOM Definition Dual Source CT (DSCT) Scanner at its center in Bangalore. The SOMATOM Definition DSCT Scanner is a low radiation dose complete diagnostic solution for head to toe applications, with high quality results, at an affordable cost. While conventional CT scanners come with one X-ray tube and one detector, the DSCT Scanner uses two X-ray tubes and two detectors at the same time. This enables the scanning procedure to be performed in half the timee and reducing the radiation dose by more than 50 percent. The DSCT is a manifestation of the latest technology, making cardiac imaging and CT scanning more reliable and accurate.
Since the DSCT scanner has a negative predictive value of 100 percent for coronary artery disease, it helps in early and accurate diagnosis of cardiac patients who show no symptoms at the early stages of coronary disorders. In the present day scenario where diagnostic tests impact over 70 percent of healthcare diagnosis and decisions, the sensitivity and specificity of results obtained by DSCT is a boon for patients with severe chest, abdominal pain, neuro and also stroke patients, for whom immediate acute care is critical. Also, due to its unique dual source technology, it can help in stone characterization for patients with kidney stone ailments.
Giving more insights about the DSCT, Dr S Radhesh, chief radiologist, said, “Until today cardiac imaging was feasible only if the patient’s heart rate was adequately low and stable. Scanning with a single source CT scanner requires the heart to be slowed down, which can cause complications in some patients. However, with the DSCT scan cardiac imaging is double the speed of fastest single source CT and performs cardiac imaging not only independent of heart rate but also without the need of beta blockers or multisegment reconsruction.”
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Raju Venkatraman, dmanaging director & CEO, Medall Healthcare, said, “At Medall, our constant endeavor is to provide diagnostic services which touch, serve and solve health related challenges of our customers, and to maximize the diagnostic confidence of our physicians. The Dual Source CT scanner is a prized possession which not only gives us the confidence but also helps us serve our customers with precision.”
Mr Raju Venkatraman added, “The market for diagnostic centres is 4 percent of the country’s overall healthcare delivery market, and is expected to grow at 20 percent year-on-year. Our vision is to become a national diagnostic chain serving 6 million in the next couple of years.”
Medall acquired Clumax diagnostics this year, to expand its existing portfolio of services and operate as a one-stop shop for all diagnostic needs. The company has centers in Bangalore, Chennai and other towns in Tamil Nadu currently, and looking at expanding operations in other cities.
