Singapore, Dec 03, 2009: A recent World Contraception Day 2009 survey conducted in Asia Pacific showed a current lack of understanding and usage of contraceptives among young men and women. The survey showed that: 64% of young men and women were not well-informed or were confused about the different contraceptive options available for themselves and their partners.
This is a higher proportion compared to Europe (45%) and US (49%). 8% of those who already had sexual intercourse were not using any form of contraception (higher figures in Singapore and South Korea: 15%) while 26% were using the withdrawal method. 45% of youths had ever had sex without contraception.
Of the annual 210 million pregnancies world wide, 38% are unplanned and 58% of these unplanned pregnancies end in abortion. This is mainly because of the lack of understanding and usage of contraceptives.
However, with more educational initiatives such as World Contraception Day by nonprofit organizations and healthcare institutions, Bayer Schering Pharma, a global player in women’s healthcare market and expert in contraception, expects an increase in the level of awareness and understanding of contraceptives, which will translate into greater contraceptive usage and demand.
According to IMS, the Women’s Healthcare market exceeded $16.5 billion worldwide in 2007 and this figure is poised to grow to $27.3 billion in 2019.
