Bangalore, Dec 01, 2009: The Indian government is making efforts to make India one of the top five pharma innovation hubs by 2020, Indian federal minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizer Shrikant Jena said.
He said this after inaugurating the two-day India Pharma Summit, which is happening of the 3-day CPhI India. The $20 billion Indian pharmaceutical industry has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 9 per cent and the government expects the sector to grow to $50 billion by 2015.
The minister said the vision of the Department of Pharmaceuticals is to enable Indian Pharmaceuticals industry to play a leading role in the global market and to ensure abundant availability, at reasonable prices within the country, of good quality pharmaceuticals of mass consumption.
The 3-day CPhI India exhibition in Mumbai will be attended by key stakeholders from the Indian Pharma industry. Over 770 exhibitors across 20 countries are participating in the exhibition will see over 26000 visitors from across the globe. The second day of the summit will be held at the sideline of the exhibition.
“The Indian Pharma Summit 2009 showcases India’s capability in the pharma sector before all the stakeholders. The summit aims at bringing in all the stakeholders such as policymakers from Government of India, State Governments, Indian Pharma industry, Regulatory Authorities, CROs, Members of Foreign Missions, global Pharma leaders and experts, and academia on one common platform to generate a healthy debate as well as to come up with solutions to the challenges being faced by the Pharma sector; in general and Indian Pharma sector, in particular,” the minister added.
Ashok Kumar, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Govt of India said, “Our aim is two fold – to ensure abundant availability of high quality pharmaceuticals that are available to the people of India at a reasonable price, and enable the Indian Pharmaceutical industry to play a leading role in the global markets”.
“The Indian Pharma Summit showcases India’s capability in the Pharma sector and its growth potential. The event will provide the opportunity to the Indian Pharma Industry for having a meaningful interaction with various key stakeholders,” said M.K. Azagiri, Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers.
